Biologically Appropriate Raw Food
for Cats, Dogs & Ferrets
About Me:
My name is Susan Beans and I have had a lot of
experience with cats and dogs. I was a Veterinarian Technician for 7 years. For the past
18 years I have been involved in various dog activities such as breeding and
showing Pembroke Welsh Corgis in confirmation, and competing in agility and flyball.
Our furry family members include: Henry Higgin-Meister our 13 year old American Staffordshire Terrier mix, Tizzy Noget Toff, our
9 year old Terrier mix, and
our 4 year old Corgi, Jumpin' Jack Flash. And last but not least, we have a 15
year old cat named Simba who guards the house while we are away at dog shows!
All of our pets are rescues. Simba
adopted us. When she was just a kitten Simba showed up one day, moved
into our backyard and refused to leave. I brought her inside during a
nasty storm and she soon convinced us that she was perfectly capable of
living with our pack of 5 dogs. She enjoys napping with Henry!
Henry was dumped in front of the animal
clinic where I worked. He had a horrible case of Demodex mange and was
about to be euthanized when his charm won me over. I nursed him back
to health and he has become one of my favorite dogs!
Tizzy was was found wandering down a road
with a Border Collie and was taken in by Border Collie rescue. We were
talked into adopting Tiz because she looked so much like Henry! She is
now the resident "princess" and prefers to sleep on our bed, under the
covers with her head on my pillow!
Jack is far more active than the average
Corgi and and was more dog than his original owners could handle, so they
turned him over to Corgi rescue. He loves his new life as a Flyball
dog and is the leader of the pack!
Simba at age 15.
She doesn't usually look this disgusted,
she just doesn't like having her picture taken!
Henry running Flyball at age 8 1/2.
Henry
is responsible for our switch to the raw diet. Henry was running
increasingly slower times in Flyball, was getting a little grumpy, and had just
lost his usual zest for life. A friend suggested that I take Henry
to her holistic veterinarian for a check-up. The veterinarian recommended
that I switch Henry to a raw diet. In just 3 weeks I noticed a significant
improvement, and after 2 months, at the age of 7, Henry ran his fastest times
ever, all three of
our dogs are now thriving on the BARF diet, and I am so impressed with the
results that I have decided to promote the raw diet by offering a wide variety
of biologically appropriate raw food products for sale (all of which must meet
the approval of my own dogs!). Henry is still competing in Flyball
at the age of 13 and has earned the title of Flyball Dog Grand Champion
(30,000 points!) It's hard to believe that I almost retired him 8
years ago!
Indy-Anna
Bones (now deceased) running Flyball
at age 10 years, 10 months. Indy earned the title of Flyball Dog Grand
Champion (30,000 pts.) at the age of 11 1/2. Indy retired at the ripe
old age of 13 1/2. When feeding kibble we never had a dog compete in
Flyball beyond the age of 10.
Tizzy running Flyball at age 5. At age 7 Tizzy earned the Flyball
Dog Grand Champion Title (30,000 pts.). Tizzy is now 9 years old, is
running as fast as ever and is closing in on the 40,000 point milestone!
At this point in time Flyball titles don't go this high!
Jumpin' Jack Flash is the newest addition to our household. Jack is
a rescue Corgi who was too active for his first 2 families. True to
his reputation, he is too wild to hold still for a photo, so the kids are
trying to hold him still! He is in training for Flyball where there is
no such thing as "too active"!
Update: Jack is now competing in Flyball and has already earned
his "Flyball Dog Champion" Title and is closing in on his Master's
title!
This is a caricature of the dogs in my
Flyball club, skillfully done by the Ruffnecks
own Jenn Davis! Can you find my four dogs? (Hint-they are all in
the front!)
